Lake Champlain Region
From Marine Village's location in Plattsburgh, the sites of the Adirondack Mountains of New York and the Green Mountains of Vermont are just a day trip away.
Right nearby is historic downtown Plattsburgh, New York, site of important battles during the Revolutionary War and home of many events throughout the year. These include the July 4th fireworks and festivities, the Mayor's Cup yacht race and celebration in mid July and the Battle of Plattsburgh weekend in early September. In the last few years Plattsburgh has become a stop on several national bass fishing tournaments' schedules. These include the Walmart FLW tour and the Stren tour. Or try your own hand competing in the LCI, which is held throughout the summer. The fishermen expound on Lake Champlain's bass fishing as some of the best they've found!
Drive southwest just a little over an hour and see Lake Placid, New York, site of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympiads. It's a scenic area with Whiteface Mountain, the Olympic skijumps, bobsled and luge runs and a charming village with great restaurants and shopping. There is also the Adirondack Train which leaves the Lake Placid/Saranac Lake area and winds through the Adirondacks.
Or take the Lake Champlain Ferry to Vermont and enjoy the shopping in Burlington, the Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Factory tour or the Vermont Teddy Bear Co. tour. Just south of Burlington is Shelburne, Vermont, home of the Shelburne Museum - a worldclass museum with something of interest for everyone, and the Shelburne Farms - a beautiful turn of the century estate and farm with a mansion (now used as a summer hotel), coach barn, and expansive grounds on the shores of the lake. It's a terrific place to visit, and you won't regret attending any of the tours or festivities held there throughout the summer.
Also within an hour's drive is Montreal, Canada - a unique, mostly French city with a rich history. Besides the historic aspect, Montreal has tremendous shopping and hosts a number of events such as a Jazz Festival, a Comedy Fest and an International Fireworks Display.
